Timeless, searing, funny and ultimately hopeful meditation on race
relations in America, told through the complex relationship between two of popular
culture's most enduring characters. When Daisy Werthan, a widowed,
72-year-old Jewish woman living in mid-century Atlanta, is deemed too old to
drive, her son hires Hoke Colburn, an African American man, to serve as her
chauffeur. What begins as a troubled and hostile pairing soon blossoms into a
profound, life-altering friendship that transcends all the societal
boundaries placed between them.

Daisy is a widow. Ages from 72 to 97 during the course of the play. Her hair,
her clothes, her walk … everything about her suggests bristle and high
energy. Jewish. Strong Atlanta accent.
Hoke Colburn Standby: Onstage role is cast (James Earl Jones). Standby
position is AVAILABLE. Hoke is an African American man. Ages from 60 to 85
during the course of the play. Daisy’s chauffeur.
Boolie Werthan Standby: Onstage role is cast. Standby position is
available. Boolie is a man who ages from 40 - 65 during the course of the play.
Daisy’s son. A businessman, Junior Chamber of Commerce style. Has a strong,
capable air. Jewish. Strong Atlanta accent.
