Timeless, searing, funny and ultimately hopeful meditation on race
relations in America, told through the complex relationship between two of popular
culture's most enduring characters. When Daisy Werthan, a widowed,
72-year-old Jewish woman living in mid-century Atlanta, is deemed too old to
drive, her son hires Hoke Colburn, an African American man, to serve as her
chauffeur. What begins as a troubled and hostile pairing soon blossoms into a
profound, life-altering friendship that transcends all the societal
boundaries placed between them.
Seeking: Daisy Werthan Standby:
Onstage role is cast (Vanessa Redgrave). Standby position is AVAILABLE.
Daisy is a widow. Ages from 72 to 97 during the course of the play. Her hair,
her clothes, her walk … everything about her suggests bristle and high
energy. Jewish. Strong Atlanta accent.
Hoke Colburn Standby: Onstage role is cast (James Earl Jones). Standby
position is AVAILABLE. Hoke is an African American man. Ages from 60 to 85
during the course of the play. Daisy’s chauffeur.

comedians, improv artists, writers, directors and editors is looking to

should be funny (silly, acerbic, sardonic, gratuitously naughty, clever,
witty, high-strung, neurotic) and able to work in a collaborative setting
(writer room is in South Harlem - close to the A/D express train 125th) with a
very diverse group. Do you look at everyday situations and think...that would
make a great sketch? Do you think you are funnier than SNL? Do you have
improv/acting training and a portfolio of sketches? Do you have an HD camera
and lighting equipment? Do you really love to edit comedy for the web? Do
you play any instruments or know how to write a good parody song? Does Andy
Samberg inspire you? Do you have a wealth of knowledge about Monty Python,
sci-fi, Kids in the Hall, The State, The Muppets and film noir? Do you read
a lot? Do you follow current events and pop culture like its the stock
market? If someone asked you, which family member do you hate the most and
what's the best way to exploit them in a sketch...would you talk about it?
Seriously, though, we want to find that individual who wants to write, act,
produce, film, edit, score, light and promote web-based sketch...not too
mention...we do four to five live shows a year. By September, we will have done
four live shows and done over a dozen films...that was in one year. Email

Axis Theatre Company was formed with a mission to present aggressive surrealism, classic vaudeville turns, and vanguard adaptation. Through the careful utilization of various media Axis has produced an eclectic series of original and published plays (including Buchner's WOYZECK, Beckett's PLAY and the U.S. premiere of Sarah Kane’s CRAVE, starring Debbie Harry) with highly advanced, state of the art technological components that enhance the internal meaning of the material. Their episodic play HOSPITAL about the interior life of a man in a coma is a West Village cult event every summer.
Additional Axis productions include PICTURE THIS; FRANKENSTEIN (original production); LISTEN HOUDINI; JULIUS CAESAR; SEVEN IN ONE BLOW, OR THE BRAVE LITTLE KID (a holiday pantomime for children based on The Brothers Grimm tale); USS FRANKENSTEIN, IN TOKEN OF MY ADMIRATION; NOT YET DIAGNOSED (NERVOUS) 1918 and LEVITTOWN; & EDGAR OLIVER’S EAST 10TH STREET.
Upcoming productions include DOWN THERE (Fall 2010) and SEVEN IN ONE BLOW (Winter 2010).
